TARGET SHOTGUN OVERVIEW

Target Shotgun (TS) includes any event that involves the use of a shotgun for the purposes of competition, specifically excluding clay shooting.

Within the overall umbrella of target shotgun there are various sub-disciplines such as GR&P shotgun using solid slug (single projectiles) on paper targets for competitions along the lines of those shot in Gallery Rifle. Long range slug shooting events, and in this instance, we mean long range for a shotgun which are shot as slow fire events at 100 and 200 yards with sighting shots to check windage and elevation are correct before shooting for score.

Also under the TS umbrella are action/practical events where the competitors are faced with a different shooting challenge at each match and the winner is the person that can shoot all the targets in the shortest time.

MINI RIFLE

Mini Rifle is the term for dynamic shooting with .22rf rifles where the time taken to shoot the targets also affects the overall score as well as the points accrued by the position of the shots on the scoring faces.

These events are always different from venue to venue and the competitors are faced with a different shooting challenge at each match; the winner is the person that can shoot all the targets in the shortest time.

3 GUN OR MULTI GUN

One of the fastest growing shooting sports is the action-packed multi-gun competition commonly known as '3 Gun'.

The reason for the name is somewhat obvious; competitors use three different firearms (in some events it may be 2) - a modern sporting rifle usually built on an AR-platform, a pistol and a shotgun. Matches generally involve courses where the shooter must move through different stages and engage targets in a variety of different positions. Each stage will often require the use of different firearms and require the shooter to transition between them or courses of fire. The shooter must move through different stages and engage targets in a variety of different positions.

Please note that there are some limitations at HPRPC which will require us to ensure that all courses of fire are suitable for our ranges. For example 90:90:90 is not a possible muzzle angle at HPRPC.

Approved targets of varying sizes will be used. Distances of the static targets might vary from 1 yard to 500 yards or anything in between. The shooter who hits the most targets - and avoids certain “no shoot” ones - in the least amount of time is the winner.

We offer a number of different opportunities and events for Practical/Shotgun shooters.

Introduction to Target Shotgun Safety course.

Purpose: Will enable sign off and SCC which is needed to participate in club shotgun events at Bisley or competitions.

Suitable for beginners to the discipline not suitable for new probationers at the club unless active members of other clubs.

Unless attendees own a section 1 shotgun, club (s2) guns will be used.

Cost £80 for the day plus cartridges. Lunch will be provided.

1-1.5 hours in the classroom, then lots of range time.

The course covers aspects of Target shotgun slug matches as well as practical shooting.

Written assessment at the end of the day.

Please note: If you cancel your attendance within 7 days of the course date you will need to pay for the course unless we are able to fill your slot. We create a waitlist for each course and will do our best to assist you with finding a replacement.

HPRPC Practical Shotgun practices and competitions:

Opportunities to test your skills on different courses of fire, shoot and compete with friends and develop.

These fast-growing events require not only marksmanship, but thought, movement, and complete familiarity with the shotgun and its zero. Each competitor shoots each stage against the clock under the close supervision of a range officer who wields an electronic timer which picks up the sound of the shots. The shooter with the quickest time usually wins that stage, provided that they have hit all the targets. No two matches are ever the same –you may also be faced with reactive targets that fall when hit. Moving targets are also used where the club has the facilities and you can be faced with anywhere from 1 to 30 targets at ranges from 5 to 100 metres!

Costs: £10 including 1 box of cartridges, Section 1 or 2 – we may advertise opportunities for different divisions separately.

Attendee SCC requirement: HPRPC, NRA SCC or equivalent, this includes UKPSA & IPSC certificate.

Please note that HPRPC only permit fibre wad cartridges up to and including size 7.5.

SLUG MATCHES

NB Gallery based Target shotgun events (Slug matches) will be arranged at Bisley. There are currently a number of practice dates available via the NRA range booking system.

Requirements: NRA or HPRPC SCC, section 1 shotgun and slugs on FAC.

Practical Shotgun masterclasses with Jon Axe

Purpose: identification of potential areas of improvement. Jon then works with each student to design drills to improve those areas & introduce metrics to measure that improvement.

Cost: £60/£100 for the day per student. Suitable for advanced practical shotgun shooters only.

Section 1 shotgun and loading equipment will be an advantage.

Mini Rifle Practice/matches for HPRPC members only

The shooter with the quickest time usually wins that stage, provided that they have hit all the targets. No two matches are ever the same. Approved targets are always used and the highest 2 hits per target are normally scored, you may also be faced with reactive targets that fall when hit. Moving targets are also used where the club has the facilities and you can be faced with anywhere from 1 to 30 targets at ranges from 5 to 100 metres!

Purpose:

Opportunities for members to familiarise themselves with the discipline and practice speed loading etc.

The attendance at the practice will support safety sign off for practical mini rifle needed to participate in competitions.

Attendees must be signed off for Gallery .22 and (optional) practical shotgun

For HPRPC competitions members must have Club sign off for Mini Rifle or valid NRA/UKPSA/IPSC certificate/SCC.

Cost: £10.00 per practice including 1 box of .22 (50) and targets.

National competitions hosted at HPRPC

HPRPC is part of the NRA Mini rifle league and we offer Mini rifle competitions open to shooters from across the country.

Cost: TBC. Although you are able to hire a club gun, we recommend you have your own.

Attendee requirement: NRA/UKPSA/IPSC certificate/SCC, HPRPC SCC for mini rifle and gallery.

Ammunition will be available on the day to purchase.

3 GUN PRACTICE

Purpose of the practice: for shooters to familiarise themselves with the discipline.

Requirements: Must be signed off for HPRPC shotgun, mini rifle and gallery (ie underlever if used) and .22 pistol if used and must own pistol. (appropriate NRA, HPRPC SCC or UKPSA/IPSC certificate is also applicable)

As not all members are able to shoot .22 some courses of fire or stages may be set up for underlever gallery as well. Details of courses of fire and calibres will be advertised in advance.

Cost: £10.00 per practice including 1 box of .22 (50) and targets

3 gun matches

We will be looking to offer a national match opportunity for multi- gun or 3 gun.

HPRPC members wishing to participate will need to be signed off by the club for all firearms they intend to shoot plus so shotgun, mini rifle , practical pistol or underlever as applicable (or have an applicable HPRPC, NRA SCC or UKPSA/IPSC certificate.)

Master class 3 gun/multi-gun

Jon Axe is a world class recent 3 gun world champion. This masterclass is for experienced shotgun/long gun shooters who also shoot pistol and who have also participated in club 3 or multi-gun practices and are looking to enhance their technique for competition.

Cost £60/£100 for the day per student.

Please ensure that you wear weather suitable clothing as you will be outside in the elements for most of the day.
