| A SCRATCH competition
is where the winner has the highest gunscore. A HANDICAP competition is
a method of comparing shooters of differing ability based on how well they shot
against their own average. Inexperienced shots with low averages may shoot much
better than their averages in the competition, this is rewarded by high
handicap scores. They may beat top class shots in a handicap competition. (If
you don't have an average then you can't have a handicap score! Three entries
in a competition provide the minimum data to calculate an average.) |

| Shooters who shoot exactly their average always
receive the maximum gunscore for the competition. Two shooters who both shoot
their averages will be tied on an equal handicap score. (Unlikely, because
averages have decimal places and gunscores don't.) |

| Shooters who shoot worse than their average by
the same score get a lower handicap score the greater their average. The better
shot is penalised more. |
The "Macrae formula" is one way of calculating
a handicap score. (There are many others.)
( Gunscore -
Average ) +
Maximum Score Possible [(Max Score x 31/30) -Average]
31/30 is an
adjustment value. Different values may be used. It may also be shown as Max
Score + 20. This adjustment value affects the spread of the handicap
scores.
It is mathematically necessary to have an adjustment value
because a shooter with an average of maximum score, who shot a maximum score
would have a mathematically incalculable handicap without it. (Zero divided by
zero? OK it's an unlikely eventuality.)
