The 1903 Petersham Certificate |
1903 CertificateThis Certificate is about 10 inches by 20 inches in size and made from a thick card. It is interesting because until now the Club is thought to have started on the 7th April 1906. However, this now shows that there was shooting activity in the area some time beforehand, since this is dated 23rd July 1903. The Society of Miniature Rifle Clubs was founded by H Marks and Major-General C E Luard and was primarily designed to teach non-service people to shoot. This probably came about because of the threat perceived from Germany but also from the impression left upon the British by the effectiveness of the Boers in the recent War. The picture below Britannia's hand seems to be very much from the Boer War. Marks also ran a magazine called the "Marksman" which seems to have started in February 1910 and is likely to be the man who donated the Marks Shield which was a major Club Championship in miniature rifle shooting and won by Ham & Petersham in 1909 and 1923 at least. |
