History

Thomas Octave Murdoch Sopwith was probably the greatest creator of aircraft the World has known. He was also a famous yachtman who got nearer that any other in trying to win the Americas Cup. Most of this was planned and worked out in Kingston. At the time that he became involved in the Club in 1918, the works were in Canbury Park Road in Kingston, although they moved (as Hawkers) in the 1930s much closer to the Club. He became a Vice President of the Club in 1918 and the Trophy dates from this time as well. The Trophy has been used for various functions, but mainly it has been the prize for the Summer Aggregate (the best rifle shot over all Summer Competitions). The 1933 it was a Class A handicap (from Class A and B), consisting of 4 targets of shots each at 100 yards. In 1931 it was a Scratch competition of 2 targets of shots each at 50 and 100 yards.

For many years it was the Club Summer Aggregate Championship.
