History

6 ½ inch embossed silver cup, 5 oz, Hallmarked Birmingham 1870

Engraved "Presented by C H E Smith Esq to the Ham and Petersham Rifle Club

Mr Calvert H E Smith, whose business was at 17 The Green, Richmond was a long term Officer and Committee Member of the Club. He was both Secretary and Treasurer of the Club for some time and, when the Club became incorporated as the Ham & Petersham Rifle & Pistol Club Ltd on 15th August 1954, he was one of the seven great and the good who sponsored the new entity.

The inscription on the Cup shows that it was initially given a the Award to the highest individual aggregate in the Boys Team Competition, the first name being added in 1921. There is however reference to the Competition earlier than this and it is not known at the moment whether this Cup was given after the Competition started or whather it was not inscribed in the early competitions. By 1933, it is a competition in the Class A handicap group (Class A and B at this time). The Course of Fire was 3 targets of 10 shots each at 50 and 100 yards. By 1935, possibly for the first year, it is a Pistol Competition, to be shot shoulder to shoulder, at 10 and 20 yards, with 6 shots rapid and 6 shots deliberate at each.

The other Calvert Smith ChallengeCup was donated as the prize in a disk breaking competition in 1925.
