History

The Cup is a 52 oz, of embossed silver, with a cover surmounted by a figure of a rifleman. It was made by Fattorini of Bradford and hallmarked Birmingham 1902

The Cup is called the Alexandra Challenge Cup and was presented to the Alexandra Park Rifle Club in December 1902. The 1907 annual report of the Club mentions that Ham & Petersham won it three times in succession and therefore outright and that Lord Sudeley donated a trophy to replace it.

The first occurrence of the Cup being used for Club Competitions is in the 1926 Annual Report, (which fits in with the inscriptions on the Cup). The Course of Fire for the Competition, held on August Bank Holiday was 1 target of 21 shots at 200 yards. 7 sighters only allowed. Entrance fee was 1/- and the prizes were :-

  • 1st, Challenge Cup and prize value 7/6d
  • 2nd Prize value 5/-
  • 3rd Prize value 2/6

This format stays until at least 1936, but in 1938 it was held between the 7th & 21st August and was 2 targets at 25, 50 & 100 yards
